The way hand writing survives

Five years ago, during a stay in Alexandria, Egypt, I had the great chance to take some calligraphy lessons. I was given ink and a reed pen, and the old teacher saw to it that I wrote with very slow, gentle motions of the wrist. To go through a single line or curve, I had to dip the pen in ink several times. An art of patience, intense concentration and manual skill.
